  • MIDIgate ($10 Shareware) - **
    - Allows clicking several files to be played in a queue.
    - Runs in it's own window.
    - Allows user to save files, loop playback, and view some embedded text.
  • Microsoft's Media Player
    The built-in Media player which is part of Windows/Win 95.
    - It is in your ":Windows" directory (mplayer.exe)
    - In Win-95, It's also accessable under Start menu | Programs | Accessories |Multimedia | Media Player ...
    - This is your basic, no frills, midi (and other format) file player.
  • GS/XG MIDI Jukebox (Shareware $24.95 (US))
    - Plays all files in a directory sequentially or randomly.
    - Automatically resets and pauses between songs.
    - Volume Control & Transpose controls. Plays audio CD's also.
    Drawbacks : Can't defeat directory play to hear just one midi.
  • MIDI Zuke Box (Freeware)
    - Plays directly from ZIPped sets of MIDI files.
    - Drawbacks : Won't play regular midi files which are not inside a zipped archive.
  • Yamaha Soft-Synthesizer S-YG20
    Trial Version Available which works for 4 weeks after installation
    - It has a software synthesizer that lets people with only FM-synth cards hear playback of the same quality as a wavetable card.
    - Allows sound quality settings to tradeoff load on CPU.
    - Has Yamaha XG synthesizer enhanced capabilities.
    - Drawbacks : Requires Pentium 66MHz or better
  • Wingroove (Shareware - $20 US)
    - Wavetable Sound Quality from non-wavetable cards - uses software synthesizer.
    - Allows sound quality settings to tradeoff load on CPU.
    - Can also be used with wavetable hardware driver, and gives a nicer user interface than many other players.
    - Full 16 Channel Mixer Function, Master Volume Control, Tempo Adjust and key transpose functions.
    - Displays file title text if present; and will display separate text files associated with songs.
    - Multiple midi files can be selected to create playlist.
  • Roland Virtual Sound Canvas (Commercial Software)
    - Demo version limited to 50 seconds of playback.
    - Wavetable Sound Quality from non-wavetable cards - uses software synthesizer.
    - Allows sound quality settings to tradeoff load on CPU.
    - Nice display of either track levels or polyphony.
    - Drawbacks : Requires Pentium/60 MHz or faster with Windows 95;
    - No playback control features (such as volume, tempo, etc.)
  • Random Midi Player (RMP) ($10 Shareware) NOTE: Home page for CAFF software does not contain MIDI player. I downloaded trial version from shareware archives. Documentation for MIDI player referenced this CAFF software home page.
    - Plays all files in a user selected directory in either random or sequential order.
    - Drawbacks: No playback control features (such as volume, tempo, etc.)
  • NoteWorthy ArtWare's NoteWorthy Player (Freeware)
    - Plays Noteworth's '*.NWC' format files as well as MIDI files.
    - Displays score notation while playing MIDI file.

    - Allows users to create and play albums of several midi and wav files in sequential or random order.
    - Drawbacks: No playback control features (such as volume, tempo, etc.)

    - This program will display/play BMP, PCX, GIF, TIF, TGA, WAV, MID, RMI, FLI, FLC, AVI and MOV files.
    - MIDI capabilities are extremely limited.
    - Primarily for multimedia graphic slide shows with midi music in background.

    Drawbacks: captures browser window while song is playing, copy which I tested also chops off last notes of midi files.

    - Allows viewing of file embedded text as well as song lyrics (if present).
    - Provides for creation and playback of albums of files.
    - Allows format conversion of files to/from '*.kar' format

    A full-featured Karaoke player, Support for Win-95 Long Names.

    - Temporarily unavailable due to Copyright conflict with program name. However, I previously checked out some beta versions of this program while it was under development.
    - Excellent DOS MIDI file player. Also shows embedded images and plays Karaoke files.
