About the Daily Page for Students of the Japanese Language

Brief Description

Designed to be used as a startup home page, the "Daily Page for Students of the Japanese Language" presents 36 kanji a day divided into 9 levels from basic to advanced. It also includes the search forms for 3 English search engines and 3 Japanese search engines along with links to useful "tools" for Japanese languages students.

About the Data for the 36 Kanji

I selected 2,412 kanji that had at least one "priority word" according to Jim Breen's EDICT.
I put them in what I felt was a good order to study them, then roughly re-sorted the list according to JLPT levels since many students plan to take these tests.
I then divided them into 9 different levels, each with 268 kanji. (Each level is further divided into 4, with the leftmost kanji coming from the first 67 kanji of that level, the next kanji comes from the next 67 kanji, etc..)
Each day, 4 kanji characters from each of these 9 levels appear on the page.
In addition to my own data I have also used data from KANJIDIC and EDICT.

Features

Put the cursor over any kanji you don't know to get one or more word examples, the readings and English meanings.
Click the kanji to go to a page with more information including a longer list of words that use that kanji.
If there are more than 6 words on the list, then you can also review the words in a matching quiz.

Use the "Daily Page" as Your Home Page

The "Daily Page for Students of Japanese Language" is set up to be a fast-loading "startup" home page.
Look in the "preferences" or "options" settings of your browser to find the place to enter the URL (http://www.manythings.org/japanese/daily/), so that each time you start your browser, you get the "daily page."
If you prefer a smaller, less cluttered page, you could set Yesterday's 36 Kanji as your home page instead. You would get to study the same kanji, but just a day later.

Development History

Version 0.05, uploaded February 14, 2005 - Rebuilt all the pages that you go to when clicking a kanji on the daily page. I decided that these pages had been "beta tested" enough, so I removed the password requirement for using these pages.
Version 0.04, uploaded February 4, 2005 - Expanded the number of kanji to 2,412. Evenly sub-divided each level in to fourths of 67 kanji each. Made a new selection of example words. Each kanji on the list is either marked as a "priority" word in EDICT or appeared at least 3 times in the newspaper word frequency list that I used in www.manythings.org/japanese/news.
Version 0.03, uploaded January 12, 2005 - Used smaller "yellow box" code. Now the page should load faster.
Version 0.02, uploaded January 11, 2005 - Cut down the number of kanji to 1,908. Only kanji that are used at least once in EDICT's Priority Words. Also, put the kanji roughly in JLPT order.
